It would very slowly convert to the gaseous form. Unless there was prolonged contact over a period of days, there would probably be negligible contact with the bad stuff.

Usually the toxicity of a substance is measured by its LD50.
Liquid elemental mercury is actually relatively safe. This is the stuff that is a shiny liquid at room temperature. The dangerous stuff tends to be mercury gas (e.g. mercuric oxide), which damages the nervous system. The effects of the bad stuff are the effects of neurodegeneration, which often involve changes in mood, behavior, and cognition, and can give you a tremor.
what is the definition of toxic. because I know of some things that are more dangerous than mercury.
This stuff scares me for a lot for reasons. But we have had people in contact with mercury for years. What are the effects? Am i going to become a zombie, or a total retard? please advise, ty

It was no mistake. The mercury was added deliberately to cause widespread neurological disorders.
i was at a school (hubble middle school) a long time ago when a kid broke into a sci. department and stole some mercury…

dude, there r just too much brainwashed ppl, i have a few grams of mercury, and ive holded it in my hands lots of times, and even tasted it, just to make ppl see that is not a damn superkiller alien substance from hell, if u want screw up ur system with mercury u would have to live in an area contaminated with it or drinking it.
The Chernobyl disaster took place because the cooling grafite rods were made hollow to save cost (against the designer print). And because of that meltdown took place. If the rods were solid the explosion would not happend.
*sigh*
Mercury is nowhere near the second most toxic SUBSTANCE on Earth.
Which reminds me, I have to continue stockpiling it, been letting down lately.

yes you are right, it was deadly and killed many, not very green I would say. I have solar panels on top of my house and it meets all of my energy needs. No land needed to be used. There are creative ways around the land use issue. And a lot less costly over time than upkeep of atomic facilities.
I will agree that atomic is more clean than coal burning, but there are may other factors/risks to consider.
Chernobyl was a tragedy, but an unavoidable one in a country wracked with the aftermath of the fall of imperialist communism. The plant was old, understaffed and barely functional.
Solar and wind turbine power are both ineffective for large-scale applications, plus they both require HUGE tracts of land to work even on the small scale.
Some fact-checking on your end would be appreciated too.
greenest energy source is not atomic. It is solar and Wind power. People do have a reason after all to fear atomic….hello chernobyl!! If you are to young to know about that, just google and educate yourself.

Mercury is also found in flu vaccine, just what the goverment needs stupid clueless people.
there is a lawsuit in the US because of this, in New Zealand it is a problem, especially with the new menzb vaccine, anyway i know people who have suffered from this real bad
how about the mercury veins found in coal!! Coal burning accounts for most 65% of our energy….Go green
