Try to simulate the motions that involve pushing away from your body like you would with the pushups… try lying on your back and basically do bench presses with the dumbbells…add weight to what you can tolerate then once those muscles are stronger you will be able to easier to the pushups.
Try reps until you fault (have to stop due to fatigue). That is your max. Try sets of at least 3 max reps per workout.
